Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the pastor in distribution of Holy Communion either within Mass or by taking Communion to shut-ins, when an ordinary minister (bishop, priest or deacon) is absent or impeded.
People in this ministry are chosen by the pastor, who submits their names to the Bishop, who approves and appoints them. They must be people in good standing with the Church and of good reputation in the community. This ministry is not permanent and only to be exercised when there is genuine need. Those chosen for this ministry go through special training classes to assure they exorcise this ministry with exceptional dignity and utmost reverence for the Lord whom they hold in their hands.
